Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) act as a bridge between schools and immigrant families. SWIS assists newcomer students and their families adjust to their school and community. The SWIS team provides information on the Ontario school system and assistance in facilitating communicating between newcomers and the school. They offer assistance based on individual needs of the family.

The program is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC).

SWIS service includes but are not limited to;

  • Interviewing and identifying settlement needs

  • Providing Information and Orientation

  • Referring and connecting to community resources

  • Assisting clients in dealing with adjustment

  • Cultural Interpretations

  • Filing out forms

  • Consultation with school staff on settlement and cultural issues

  • Children and Youth Group events

  • Monthly SWIS Newsletter and Updates
