What is a Positive Space?

  • A welcoming environment where members of the *2SLGBTQ+ community are able to access inclusive services with dignity and respect

  • Employees can work free from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

  • An ongoing process.

  • Positive Spaces are also welcoming environments where 2SLGBTQ+ newcomers are able to access culturally inclusive services with dignity and respect. 2SLGBTQ+ newcomers are an integral, though often invisible, part of immigrant and refugee communities, as well as 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Experiencing marginalization from within both cultural communities and mainstream 2SLGBTQ+ communities often leaves individuals feeling that there are few options for obtaining services.

  • It is everyone's responsibility to create Positive Spaces by challenging homophobia and heterosexism, transphobia, biphobia and cisexism.

*2SLGBTQ+ = 2-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer; the plus sign acknowledges and represents other identities not explicitly listed in the acronym
